Spring Home and Garden Tours - April 2005Each year, several intown neighborhoods take advantage of Atlanta's magnificent Spring floral displays to stage their home and garden tours, and this year is no exception. Each tour requires a ticket for admission and tickets are generally available for a reduced rate when purchased in advance. Check the web sites listed for more details.
April 9th and 10th (Saturday - Sunday)The Midtown Neighbors Association will host the Midtown Tour of Homes the same weekend as the Dogwood Festival (Friday through Sunday), an annual rite of Spring at Piedmont Park. Midtown boasts a wide variety of styles - Craftsman bungalows, Tudor, Victorian, Contemporary, even the occasional Mediterranean style. The homes are within easy walking distance of each other, and, if you have the stamina, you can head over to the Park afterwards and enjoy music, entertainment, games, and lots of food. (Find out more at midtowntourofhomes.com.)April 15th - 17th (Friday - Sunday)Druid Hills, Miss Daisy's very own neighborhood, will host its home and garden tour over three days. Billed as a walking tour, you may need a car to visit all the homes in this elegant, affluent neighborhood that features eclectic architecture (many homes were custom designed - including a number by Atlanta's premier architect of the 1920s, Neel Reid). Boxed lunches and beverages are available for purchase at the Candler House on Ponce de Leon Avenue, and parking is available at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. (Find out more at druidhillstour.org.)While you're out and about in Druid Hills, be sure to check out the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance's Charity Garage Sale at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany (Ponce de Leon Avenue at East Lake Road). Proceeds will benefit the group's efforts to restore the parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue. Find out more at atlantaolmstedpark.com/news.asp. April 22nd - 24th (Friday - Sunday)Inman Park, Atlanta's first real suburb, features many fine Victorian homes. Each year this activist neighborhood hosts a Spring blow out with parade (held on Saturday, and complete with the Inman Park Trash Queen riding a street sweeper), a street/artists' market, a dance festival, children's activities (pony rides, moon walk, face painting, rock climbing wall), and a wonderful home tour. Plan to make a day (or a weekend) of it. (Find out more at inmanpark.org/fest2005.php.)Many other intown neighborhoods (Candler Park, Grant Park, Lake Claire, City of Decatur, and Morningside/Lenox Park) hold their home tours during the Fall, so remember to keep an eye out for them after the Summer! |
