About This Home:

This is a beautifully renovated and expanded 3 bedroom, 2 bath bungalow for sale in Atlanta's historic Grant Park neighborhood. Built circa 1903, this home has charming details throughout -- including 11' ceilings, heart pine flooring, 4 original fireplaces, original built-ins, pocket doors, and a beautiful stained glass bay window. To that it adds renovated kitchen and baths and a true master suite with his and hers walk-in closets plus a large, private full bath. The house is slightly elevated from the street level and has a spacious front yard with fountain and brick walkway to the wrap-around front porch. The period front door with transom opens into a grand central hallway that spans the length of the house. Rooms include: a generous living room with fireplace and bay window; a formal dining room with fireplace; renovated kitchen open to the dining room beyond a peninsula with breakfast bar and 2-sided glass cabinets; a master suite with large bedroom, fireplace, built-in cabinet, his and hers walk-in closets, and very charming private full bath with clawfoot tub/shower, console sink with his and hers granite-topped vanity areas, and high tank water closet; renovated hall bath featuring walk-in shower with frameless glass enclosure; large back bedroom with windows on 2 walls; and large front bedroom with private entry (great for home office!) and the 4th original fireplace. There's a combination screened and open back porch that leads down to the large, picket-fenced backyard with detached storage building. This home also has alley access to off-street parking for 2 cars.

This home is located in the historic Grant Park neighborhood, which is one of Atlanta's oldest neighborhoods. It is about one block from the 130+ acre park at the center of the neighborhood, which is Atlanta's oldest surviving city park and home to Zoo Atlanta and the Cyclorama. Additional park amenities include a swimming pool, 2 playgrounds, ballfields, tennis and basketball courts, a recreation center, special events pavillions and picnic shelters. The Grant Park Conservancy is a nonprofit community group whose mission is to protect and preserve this wonderful public resource. Other nearby recreational amenities include: Brownwood Park; Glen Emerald Park (and lake); and downtown's major sports venues including Turner Field (home of the Braves), Philips Arena (home of the Hawks, Thrashers, and Georgia Force), and the Georgia Dome (home of the Falcons).

Grant Park was one of the first intown Atlanta neighborhoods to revitalize in the 1980s. Since that time, many professionals and families have moved into the neighborhood and restored the elegant historic homes. The neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s in recognition of its architectural significance and historic integrity. [More info.] The Grant Park Neighborhood Association is a strong voice in the community and maintains one of Atlanta's best neighborhood web sites [gpna.org].

There's plenty of nearby shopping in this area including: the Edgewood Retail District (a huge multi-use development on Moreland Avenue with 500k of retail space, including major national chains such as: Target, Lowe's, Office Depot, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, and Kroger); Glenwood Park (another multi-use development with a mix of shops and restaurants); and East Atlanta Village (a vibrant neighborhood shopping district). This area is convenient to all of Downtown Atlanta, and provides easy access to both I-20 and I-75/85. The King Memorial MARTA rail station not far away, and allows for a quick commute to Hartsfield Airport.

Children in this neighborhood attend Parkside Elementary School (one of Atlanta's newest elementary schools). In addition to the traditional public schools, Grant Park is home to a popular charter elementary school (Neighborhood Charter School) and the new Atlanta Charter Middle School that opened in 2005. Both schools feature a hands-on, project-oriented curriculum focused on ecology and conservation, with a partnership with nearby Zoo Atlanta. The middle school also includes a strong community service component in its curriculum. There is a 3rd, brand new charter school in the neighborhood as well. The 2007-2008 school year is the first for the Imagine Wesley Charter School, which will serves children in grades K-6 (expanding to 8th grade by 2010), and uses the Interntational Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years curriculum. Additionally, the school has single-gender classes for core curriculum and offer daily Chinese lessons for all grades. In addition to these schools, there's also a Cooperative Preschool that uses the Reggio Emilia approach. The Grant Park Parent Network is also quite active.
